travel lanes are open. after that looking good heading to the beltway. aaron? un? >> thank you, mike. today marks the 11th anniversary of the september 11th terror attacks. the president will attend a private memorial for survivors and families of the victims at the pentagon. our megan mcgrath is live there with more on tributes planned for today. megan, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, un. this is a day that changed this country forever. and while it happened 11 years ago for the families, the pain is still fresh. this will always be a very painful and difficult day for them. now, 59 people on board flight 77 were killed. 125 others were killed inside the pentagon. now, last year, of course, was the tenth anniversary. the first since osama bin laden was killed. and there was a very large ceremony here at the pentagon. family members in attendance, dignitaries as well as employees and survivors of the attack. now, this year, however, things will be quite different. the remembrance ceremony that

gets under way at 9:30 this morning will be only open to family members, much smaller than we've seen in the past. the victims memorial is also closed to the general public. they're doing this to allow family members to reflect and mourn in private. and really there's been a big effort here this year to do just that. make this a very private and intimate ceremony and event for the family members to give them time to mourn privately with their families. now, for those wishing to honor those who died here, you can do so. the victims memorial will reopen after the ceremony this morning right around 12:00. and, of course, we'll have an update later on in the show. reporting live from the pentagon, megan mcgrath, news 4. un, back to you. >> megan, thank you. thousands of people will also gather at the world trade center memorial site to honor those live. this is a live look at new york right now. this year's ceremony will be very ircht did from years past. no politicians will speak, only relatives will read names of the victims. there will be four moments of silence at the time each plane

hit and each tower fell. at sunset, the tribute in light will stretch four miles into the sky inspired by the shape of the twin towers. today vice president joe biden will attend a memorial service at the site where flight 93 crashed near shanksville, pennsylvania. defense secretary leon panetta was there yesterday. he took a tour and participated in a wreath-laying ceremony. that stone wall is covered with the names of the passengers and crew. i'm honored to emcee a special service later this morning here in d.c. serve d.c. and hands on greater d.c. cares are sponsoring a day of service at freedom plaplaza. it's dedicated to supporting veterans and first responders. it will feature emergency preparedness demonstrations and training as well as a recruitment fair. you'll see a heightened security presence today on metro. you might notice more police at the stations. in montgomery county, officers will be using a new safety tool. they're carrying devices on their belts that detect

radiation. a hit causes lights to flash and a vibration or audio signal. the department recently bought 40 of these detectors with federal grant money. >> the type of radiation we're trying to detect is the type of radiation that would be seen as the ideal ingredient for a weapons of mass destruction, a dirty bomb, one of the ingredients that the terrorists would like to use. >> police say there is no threat against metro. they're just being proactive. a montgomery county police spokesperson says during the months they've used the devices, there's only been one alarm. this morning senior u.s. officials are confirming that the number two al qaeda leader in yemen has been killed. yemeni officials say he was killed by a hellfire missile from a u.s. drone. five other militants were killed in the attack. the man was released from guantanamo bay prison in 2007. u.s. officials believe he was directly involved in the underwear bomber plot to blow up a u.s. plane in december 2009. police in the district are investigating a shooting

overnight in southeast. this happened about midnight in the 300 block of ridge road near a rental office for d.c. public housing. police say a man was shot once in the leg. he was found by people passing by and taken to a nearby hospital. his injury is serious, but he will survive. no arrests in that shooting. 6:06 now. the fairfax county school board is looking at ways to deal with overcrowding in its schools. the problem is particularly prevalent at fairfax high school. it's already overcrowded and enrollment is expected to grow in coming years. the school board just voted to launch a boundary study to look for possible solutions. that may not solve many problems because many nearby high schools are also overcrowded. some students may be assigned to new schools. also in northern virginia, the first lady will be campaigning this week. michelle obama will visit the university of mary washington in fredericksburg on thursday. the first lady was supposed to come to fredericksburg several weeks ago but canceled that appearance after the colorado movie theater shooting. 6:06 is your time now. 55 degrees.

security feature that could be coming to future iphones. you're watching "news 4 today." >> a florida tech company says it is the source of a file containing a million i.d. numbers for apple devices taken by hackers last week. blue toad which creates apps and mobile materials said it made the discovery after the hackers posted the numbers online. the hackers had claimed that they stole the file from an fbi agent's laptop. the i.d.s don't typically contain personal information,

rather correspond to a certain device. security could be getting an upgrade of the iphone and ipad. apple is in final stages of purchasing a mobile security company called authentech. their biggest product fingerprint scanners. at's led to new speculation that iphones and ipads could soon come with a fingerprint scanner built into the screen or back of the phone. it isn't expected to be part of the iphone due out tomorrow. the web-hosting site godaddy is back up and running. someone hacked the site yesterday taking down millions of sites it serves. an anonymous hacker is taking responsibility for the attack. the hacker says it picked godaddy to test its skiber security. godaddy says it will provide more on the cyber attack today. this morning hundreds of thousands of chicago parents are scrambling to place -- for a place to send their children with the public schoolteachers on strike there in a bitter contract dispute. the chicago teachers union and the school board still have not been able to agree on a new

contract. there is an impasse concerning new reforms that link new teacher evaluations with standardized test results. in exchange for a 16% raise over four years. the two sides cannot agree on health benefits, pensions and job security. a lot of parents just want the issue resolved so their kids can go back to school. >> this thing can end kind of fast. >> they need to be in school. it's horrible, ludicrous. >> they need to pay these teachers. these teachers make everyone who they are today. >> chicago mayor rahm emanuel says the teachers cannot agree on evaluations and who hires teachers. he favors local principals in charge of hiring as opposed to school district leaders. [ bleep ]. >> take a look at this vicious attack on a cab driver in north carolina. a marine is wanted for the beating. gunnery sergeant john kanosh start eed pummeling the driver.

he threatened to kill the driver. the driver says he was picking up another passenger to try and cut his fare. the marine checked himself into a mental facility. police say they'll arrest him as soon as he's released. a 17-year-old boy shot in the cafeteria on the first day of school in baltimore is home. he was shot last month at perry hall high school. he left the hospital yesterday after two weeks. the boy who has down syndrome suffered a bruised lung and hole in his torso. the accused gunman is charged aas an adult with attempted murder and assault. today players, fans and family and friends will say their final good-byes to legendary ravens' owner art modell. he'll be laid to rest at 11:00. last night the ravens paid tribute to helmet decals and a video before the game. he's best known for bringing football back to baltimore. he died thursday at 87. the next time your kid gets

let's take a live look at the camera light at lorton road. northbound traffic headed away. slow traffic in the main lanes and hov lines. about a 15 minute ride to the beltway. also slow northbound 395 and crossing the 14th street bridge. the whole trip there will take you about 16 minutes. aaron? eun? this morning a mother is looking for answers in her daughter's murder. prince george's county police now working with the fbi to help solve the murder mystery. last night police held a public meeting about the murder of amber stanley. they say her murder was not a random attack. last month a masked gunman kicked down the door at her home. he went into her bedroom and opened fire killing the teenage honors student. >> i miss her, and i wish she was here. i used to kiss her every morning. we'd always kiss each other on both cheeks. >> police handed out flyers reminding people of a $25,000 reward leading to an arrest and

indictment. robbery does not appear to be the motive behind a shooting inside a rite-aid in northeast. police are asking for your help to find the gunman. video shows the man entering the store around 9:30 sunday night. police say he covered his face with a surgical mask and shot an employee. the victim is expected to be okay. in april, surveillance cameras at the same store captured a different gunman shooting the manager in a robbery, paralyzing him from the waist down. the suspect was arrested in that case. the five men who were convicted of one of the deadliest shootings in d.c. history will be sentenced today. carter, carter, best, bost and williams will all learn their fates. the men carried out a series of violent crimes in march 2012 that culminated in the south capital street mass shooting which killed three and injured six. in all the men killed five and injured nine people in a series of revenge attacks that prosecutors say started over

stolen costume jewelry. all five face life in prison. 6:33 now. a former aide to mayor gray has helped prosecutors so much in their corruption investigation that he likely won't end up in jail. prosecutors said in court documents that howard brooks has provided substantial assistance and that probation and community service would be a suitable sentence. brooks pled guilty in may to lying to the fbi about making payments to fringe candidate brown. he is one of three former gray aides to plead guilty to corruption. he will be sentenced october 10th. sentencing for former d.c. council chairman kwame brown has been delayed. brown pled guilty to bank fraud in june. he admitted to lying about his income on bank loan applications. the judge moved back his sentencing to november 12th to give him more time to cooperate with prosecutors. he faces a maximum sentence of six months in prison for each

charge. a local naacp chapter wants laurel's police department investigated by federal prosecutors. this stems from this cell phone video that appears to show an officer punching or slapping a man in handcuffs last month. leaders with the prince george's county chapter of the naacp say they want possible --ñp1úc this video shows possible police brutality, and they want the justice department to step in. they also want a federal probe into what they call racial profiling and discrimination and hiring. the officer in that video is currently on administrative duty. 6:35. 55 degrees. ahead, a change in plans this year to honor those local people who died on 9/11. also, drivers being told to brace for the worst. the work that begins today and lasts for a year and a half. plus, new pressure in the debate over who should pay to keep metro open late

overnight in southeast. this happened after 2:00 this morning in the 300 block of ridge road near a rental office for d.c. public housing. police say a man was shot once in the leg. he was found by people passing by and then taken to a nearby hospital. his injury is serious, but he will survive. no arrests in that shooting either. a judge ordered the release of a figure skating coach in laurel accused of fondling a teenage student. 50-year-old gingrich fortenski competed in the 1988 olympics. he now has to turn himself in to police in 72 hours. he's accused of kissing and fondling a student in lake placid last year. he denies those allegations. american express is going after gary giordano. it's suing the man who was suspected in the death of his travel companion, robyn gardner, in arube sgardner, in arube a in arube ruba. amex wants to void the policy giordano took out in gardner's name before their vacation last year. the company claims the policy is not legal because the two weren't married, related or business partners. giordano insists gardner was

swept out to sea while they were snorkeling. police in aruba eventually released him from jail because of a lack of evidence. hundreds of fairfax high school students may soon have to choose -- or rather have to go to school somewhere else. the high school is already overcrowded, and the problem is expected to get worse in the coming years. the fairfax county school board just voted to launch a boundary study to look for possible solutions. that may not solve many problems because many nearby high schools are also overcrowded. some students may have to be assigned to new schools as early as next year. it's not encouraging for anyone looking for work. new numbers show companies are not expecting to go on any hiring sprees this year. cnbc has that suspect seema, good morning. >> good morning. u.s. companies appear reluctant to add workers this fall. now, it's because of uncertainty over the presidential election. the so-called fiscal cliff of spending cuts and tax hikes that are looming in january. and the effect of europe's economic slowdown.

a traffic alert if your commute takes you near dupont circle. that could make for major traffic headaches from h street all the way to dupont circle. news 4's tony tull is live with more. tony, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. big headaches, as you mentioned. not quite early this morning but take a live look right now. we're on new hampshire near 21st. and traffic not that bad moving quite nicely. you also see some of the enclosures they have over the sidewalks. and this is all part of a discreetscape project expected to last around 18 months weather permitting but could possibly go for two years. as for the construction, the plans to miss sidewalks, resurface parts of the street as well as fixing water and storm drain pipes. the construction will be going on between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. so make sure you plan accordingly during the week. as for the weekend, the plan is to handle repairs overnight. now, if you commute using the metro or the bus, don't worry. the stations and the stops will be open and operating as normal. now, one thing to note, this is
